Beyond the Circuit: 5 Things to Do in Lombok
1. Kuta Lombok Beaches
Not to be confused with its Bali namesake, Kuta Lombok is a collection of pristine, crescent-shaped bays with turquoise water and white sand. Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, and Mawun Beach are all within 20 minutes of the Mandalika circuit. Unlike the crowded beaches up north, you will often have entire stretches of sand to yourself. Surfing, swimming, or simply lying in the shade of a palm tree — this is Lombok at its most untouched.
2. Sasak Village Culture
The Sasak people are the indigenous inhabitants of Lombok, and their traditional villages offer a window into a way of life that has endured for centuries. Sade and Ende villages, both close to the circuit, feature hand-woven textiles, thatched-roof lumbung houses, and a warm hospitality that makes every visitor feel welcome. A guided visit takes about an hour and pairs well with a morning track session.
3. Mount Rinjani
Indonesia's second-highest volcano rises 3,726 metres above Lombok's northern coast. The two-to-three-day trek to the crater rim rewards hikers with views of a stunning turquoise crater lake — Segara Anak — and on clear mornings, a panorama stretching from Bali's Mount Agung to Sumbawa. Even if a full summit trek is not on your agenda, the foothills offer waterfalls, hot springs, and cooler mountain air.
4. Gili Islands
Three small islands off Lombok's northwest coast — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — are famous for their car-free streets, coral reefs, and laid-back atmosphere. Snorkelling with sea turtles, diving the coral walls, or simply swinging in a hammock above the waterline: the Gilis are the perfect counterpoint to a day of high-speed laps. Fast boats from Bangsal Harbour take 15 minutes.
5. Local Cuisine
Lombok's food is bold, fresh, and distinctly different from Balinese cooking. Ayam Taliwang — grilled chicken in a fiery chilli paste — is the island's signature dish. Plecing Kangkung, water spinach in a sambal tomato dressing, appears on every warung table. For seafood, head to Senggigi's beachfront restaurants or the night market in Mataram. Wash it all down with a young coconut straight from the tree.
Lombok is an island that rewards curiosity. Whether you spend a day or a week, you will find that the world beyond the circuit is every bit as exhilarating as the laps themselves.
